World premiere at LIGNA

World premiere at LIGNA The Fibonacci principle Users can benefit in a wide variety of ways from the tool innovations at LIGNA 2023. For example, for the first time at LIGNA, LEUCO will present the woodworking and processing industry with a completely new, patent-pending concept for arranging cutting edges on basic tool bodies. Another novelty at the show will be the regeneration of fixed slide milling cutters. The advantages of the various innovations are wide-ranging, be it reduced power consumption, longer tool life, better edge qualities or saving resources, etc. New tool concept based on the Fibonacci principle The engineers at LEUCO were inspired by nature and successfully transferred the Fibonacci principle to the tool world for the arrangement and distribution of the cutting edges on the basic body. The Fibonacci principle can often be found in nature when it comes to the optimum utilization of limited space. Well-known examples are the seeds of a sunflower or a pine cone, whose number is maximally and optimally distributed on the available space. Arrangement of the blades according to the Fibonacci principle is patent pending by LEUCO. This approach from bionics enriches and expands LEUCO’s portfolio and is used where it achieves performance improvements. At LIGNA, LEUCO will present the distribution of cutting edges on the basic body according to the Fibonacci principle using several tool types. Throughfeed machining: Jointing cutters with the Fibonacci principle The “LEUCO SmartJointer airFace” and “LEUCO p-System” jointing cutters are established and proven greats in the industry. At LIGNA, LEUCO will show two market-relevant D 125 mm dimensions with LEUCO’s patentpending ideal cutting edge arrangement based on the Fibonacci principle. The SmartJointer airFace jointing cutter is characterized in particular by its diamondtipped cutting blades, which can be changed by the customer on site, and its constant diameter after they have been changed. In the SmartJointer airFace, the innovative cutting edge arrangement produces a particularly fine cutting pattern of the narrow face, even with changing board thicknesses. The LEUCO p-System with its unique 70° shear angle stands for excellent joining quality with very long tool life. With the p-system, practical applications have shown measurably longer tool life. The LEUCO tool experts advise on suitable applications for jointing cutters with cutting edge arrangement according to the Fibonacci principle. Machining on CNC Nesting with end mill Z4+4 according to Fibonacci principle The combination of high feed rate and very slim tool diameter can be put into practice with the new Z4+4 nesting cutter with diameter 12 mm. The cutter with cutting length 23 is ideally used for raw or coated chipboard. As application parameters, for example, a feed rate vf of 17 – 22 m/min at a speed of 18,000 rpm or even a feed rate of 22 – 29 m/min at a speed of 24,000 rpm are possible. With these data, this nesting cutter is one of the high-performers in the industry. The diamond- tipped cutter can be resharpened several times. Z4+4 on the slim diameter of 12 mm enables the Fibonacci principle. LEUCO has applied for a patent for this type of cutting edge arrangement on the basic body. Solid wood machining: Disc tine cutters based on the Fibonacci principle and easyFix drilling Disc finger jointing cutters have been state of the art on finger jointing lines for many years. Innovative, user-friendly and energy- saving is the design of the new disc tine cutter according to the Fibonacci principle. Transferring the Fibonacci principle to the cutting edge arrangement on tools is patent pending by LEUCO. For users, disc tine cutters with this principle mean, among other things, a reduction in power consumption of about 20 percent. The new disc tines are also designed with LEUCO’s patented easyFix bore. This prevents jamming when pushing the discs onto or removing them from the spindle. Digitization = serialization = digital twin Re-serialization means profiting more quickly from the benefits of the digital twin The digital twin brings several advantages to the production of a woodworking company. It contains data describing the tool and its properties, it provides information on the current location of the tool, and it makes it possible to record the tool’s usage data. With such data, it is possible to see in retrospect what performance a tool has delivered and to make accurate forecasts for future tool requirements. The basis for the digital twin is either digital data provided by the tool manufacturer with the new tool, or the company serializes its inventory at a later date. The more extensive the data pool, the faster companies benefit from the advantages of the digital twin. LEUCO supports the push into digital processes and will show a multi-stage model for the post-serialization of inventory tools at LIGNA. www.leuco.de 10 No. 2 • May 2023

Early detection of explosions With the GSME and HOTSPOT detectors from REMBE, an artificial intelligence has been created that detects explosion events at an early stage. The GSME detector is an artificial nose, “trained” for pyrolysis – popularly known as smoldering gases, while the HOTSPOT detector represents an artificial eye that already detects surface temperature changes of 1 °C. REMBE´s HOTSPOT X20 measures surface temperatures using an intelligent evaluation system, which divides the field of view into detection zones. A separate temperature threshold value can be set for each individual zone in order to tailor the detection to the process as far as possible. The HOTSPOT X20 can even identify small temperature increases (1 °C) and enables to warn the operator of glowing embers at extremely early stages. The HOTSPOT X20 can also be used in explosion atmosphere up to zone 20 and under high dust loads and monitors a temperature range in the standard version of 0 – 200 °C (higher temperatures possible, but typically not required). Mainly hydrocarbon compounds are released when many substances thermally decompose. If there is incomplete burning without a flame and a low oxygen supply, carbon monoxide is created as well. The GSME X20 pyrolysis gas detector, for instance, has been designed for detecting these gases, even as they develop. Alongside carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon compounds, nitrogen oxide and hydrogen compounds (CO, HC, H2 and NOx) are also monitored. With the aid of an intelligent evaluation algorithm, a process behaviour can be ideally mapped and normal off-gasing be adopted. If a concentration increases above the usual level, the GSME X20 immediately triggers an alarm. The detector, is also suitable for explosion atmospheres up to zone 20, monitors concentration ranges from 0 – 100 ppm. When the location and mounting position are ideally designed in an explosion protection concept, HOTSPOT X20 and GSME X20 allow explosions to be prevented through early detection. www.rembe.de No. 2 • May 2023 11
