Sustainability Long wood

Sustainability Long wood scrap for long winters Russian furniture giant Lerom relies on a WEIMA ZM 40 four-shaft shredder to process more than 20 cubic meters of wood waste from production every day. In 1997 the first piece of furniture was sold under the Lerom brand. Over the past 20 years, the furniture factory has grown to become one of the largest Russian furniture manufacturers. On more than 100,000 square meters, 1,100 employees design, plan, build and package the high-quality furniture pieces in Sarechny. The product range includes modular furniture for living rooms, bedrooms and children’s rooms. The quality brand is Long and bulky wood scraps from particleboard, MDF and fiberboard, but also solid wood cuttings end up in the hopper of the ZM 40 shredder. known not only in all regions of Russia, but also in surrounding countries. 20 cubic meters of wood waste per day Every day, Lerom produces more than 20 cubic meters of wood waste. Not only does this take up valuable storage space, it also poses a fire safety risk and is extremely costly to dispose of. Together with its Russian partner SWEMA, WEIMA was able to offer a space-saving, efficient solution. In 2020, a WEIMA ZM 40 four-shaft shredder was added to the furniture factory’s machinery. The shredder is used in three-shift operation almost around the clock and shreds more than seven cubic meters of wood waste per shift, including long and bulky sections of particleboard, MDF and fiberboard, but also solid wood scraps. WEIMA ZM 40: Efficient shredding of bulky materials The material is fed by hand via the generously sized material feed hopper. The wood waste is shredded between the two cutting shafts and pushed through the cutting gap by two clearing shafts. The screen placed underneath defines the grain size of the shredded material. Two powerful electric motors drive the four shafts. Due to the slow speed of approx. 25 rpm, an extremely high torque is developed. This enables a high throughput rate with low power consumption. The furniture company is particularly enthusiastic about the simple operation via Siemens PLC control, the high reliability of the shredder, and the high throughput. Saving heating costs with wood waste The wood chips are then transported to the central chip bunker via an exhaust system. During the long, cold months, the shredded wood waste serves as fuel for a wood chip heating system that heats the production rooms. The new recycling system enables significant cost savings, not only in waste disposal but also in heating the premises. www.weima.com Efficient wood shredding and chipping solutions at Lisderevmash Wood chipping made easy From September 28 to 30 this year, Vecoplan AG will present its solutions for wood processing at Lisderevmash, the international trade fair for forestry and wood processing in Kiev, Ukraine. One of the company’s presentations will focus on its optimised biomass chipper. Lisderevmash in Kiev is an international exhibition of machinery, equipment, technologies and tools for forestry and wood processing - and it’s also an informative forum for furniture manufacturers. The wood processing industry and carpenters, cabinet makers and joiners must all be able to reliably process chipboard, hardwood, solid wood waste, bark, cardboard and softwood into wood chips and briquette-ready material. Vecoplan is also a solution provider for wood processing and the company will be informing visitors in Kiev about individual components in the processing of residual wood and on overall concepts, including installation and service. Among other products, the Vecoplan experts will be presenting the VHZ series, a compact single-shaft shredder which is particularly suitable for wood processing operations. They will also present the new VTH 450-850 and VTH 450-1050 biomass chippers. These robust, reliable and powerful chippers have short, horizontal feeding units to produce large throughput quantities of energy chips for thermal use in biomass power plants. However, the new chippers are also ideal for sawmills, where they can be used to efficiently chop waste wood that is free of impurities. Visitors can learn all about the company’s expertise and broad product portfolio at the Vecoplan exhibition booth in hall 2. The VHZ wood shredder is compactly built and energy-efficient. www.vecoplan.com 12 No. 3 • August 2021

Sustainability New exterior coatings for wood with permanent flame retardancy However, there are still obstacles that prevent the increased use of wood in the building industry. For buildings higher than seven metres, low flammability is one of the minimum requirements for façade claddings. There are currently no processing technologies or approaches for wooden façades to make cladding material permanently fire retardant. In outdoor applications, such as façades, it must by all means be taken into consideration that the effectiveness of treatment is quite drastically reduced by weather exposure. But as façade systems remain in buildings for decades, the robustness of fire protection measures with regard to outdoor impacts, such as weather and damage, is of high importance. Hence, the aim of a new research project at the IHD is to develop defined Fire Retardant Treatment (FRT) procedures, for enhancing wood products to become permanently low flammable construction materials in weather-exposed applications in civil engineering. Thereby, reaction to fire is always influenced by the total setup, i.e. the complete system arrangement, and needs to be duly and compulsorily tested as a building product in its new state. Therefore, proof of durability of behaviour when exposed to fire acc. to DIN EN 16755:2017 needs to be newly taken into account for FRT wood-based products after applying weathering procedures. Based on investigations on the surface-stable, washout-resistance combination of the required system components (wood substrates, FR impregnations, FR coatings, protective coatings), in application-related variants, functional systems of permanent low flammability shall be found. The project results shall substantially contribute to satisfying the rising material requirements, especially those of safety relevance. Surface materials made from the renewable source material wood shall be made fit in a multistep development process as cladding material in outdoor civil engineering applications of permanent flame retardancy, expressly for façades of buildings. The project, with the funding code F719001, is co-financed by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) based on a resolution taken by the Deutscher Bundestag, via the project support agency Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. (FNR) (expert agency for renewable resources, non-profit). www.ihd-dresden.de NESTRO single-shaft shredders sell extremely well WIN_2019.pdf 24 15.02.2019 13:55:48 The new NESTRO chippers of the NSL series introduced in autumn 2020 are establishing themselves on the market. Single-shaft technology has asserted itself in the market for wooden material in the woodworking industries. Reliability and a high utility value make the new machines the number one choice for industry and trades. The cutting rotor with its rotatable and replaceable cutters delivers high chipping performance combined with energy efficiency. NESTRO shredders make this possible with load-dependent pusher control. Thanks to the sophisticated plug system, a high level of manufacturing precision also can be attained reflected in construction with an excellent accuracy of fit and low distortion. www.nestro.com C Less energy, more power!
