SURFACES At Delos HQ in New York, mafi Creates a Feel-good Atmosphere Sustainable, Healthy and Aesthetic In the middle of New York City and yet amazingly close to nature: The Delos headquarters in the Meatpacking District features “green“ office design. This not only includes the lush planting of the terraces and interiors - the entire head office has been designed sustainably. Elegant EICHE Vulcano natural oak wood from mafi fits perfectly with the concept and contributes to the continuous improvement of indoor air. Highest standards for the ”green building” approach The American company Delos specializes in innovative solutions and concepts for health and wellbeing in the spaces in which we live and work. When it came to designing their own company headquarters in Manhattan, the wellness experts were certain that they wanted to set a good example: Not only the ”WELL Building Standard ” criteria developed by Delos itself had to be met, but also further certifications for sustainable buildings such as ”LEED” and the ”Living Building Challenge”. The project was commissioned by the renowned architectural firm Gensler, which has a lot of experience in the field of green office design. Room climate as a key factor for efficiency One of the key objectives of the project was to ensure good air quality in the offices. Humans spend 90 percent of their lifetime in buildings, so factors such as air quality can affect health. Room air is decisively influenced by the products used in the interior design. For this reason, the architects paid particular attention to healthy, pollutant-free furniture and materials. Stairs as eye-catchers and style elements When designing the central staircase that connects the two office floors, the choice was made for a product that combines all the advantages: EICHE Vulcano brushed / oiled natural natural oak wood parquet flooring from the Austrian company mafi is simultaneously environmentally-friendly, house-healthy, durable, long-lasting, maintenance-friendly and extremely aesthetic. The medium brown natural wood with an elegant grain not only adorns the steps, but also the wall and ceiling of the staircase. Thanks to a special heat treatment developed by mafi, for which no chemical additives are required, lends the oak its warm brown tones. The wood is refined exclusively with natural wood floor oils based on linseed oil. Floors from mafi are formaldehyde-free, have no VOCs and are also ideal for allergy sufferers. The open-pored wood surface can absorb moisture and emit it back into the ambient air - which is why the parquet floors by mafi function like natural air conditioning. Object-suited, oiled natural wood floors In heavily trafficked areas - such as the staircase of a corporate headquarters - the durability of a floor is another important criterion. The EICHE Vulcano brushed/natural oiled, natural oak wood parquet impresses here thanks to the dimensionally stable 3-layer structure that is so typical of mafi products. The softwood middle layer also insulates footstep noise and thus improves room acoustics. Another feel-good factor that makes working in the Delos wellness office even more pleasant and relaxing. www.mafi.com 32 No. 3 • August 2019

DECORS The Latest Trends with Decor and Structure Combinations From natural and fresh, to rough and casual: Pfleiderer, the leading partner for structural and refined natural materials presented the decorative trends and new products at the Interzum trade fair. ”For our new decors and textures we examined current living trends in depth”, explained Christiane Gebert, Head of Design & Development at Pfleiderer. ”The trend is very clearly towards materials such as concrete, metal and textile, as well as more muted variations of wood, stone and marble. This was the basis on which the new collection variants were selected.” In 2019, there are therefore around 35 new decors, which extend the company’s portfolio offered worldwide. The living styles, into which Pfleiderer classifies its various decors, help to illustrate and inspire. Understatement & nonchalance are also reflected by the still fashionable industrial look: Ground concrete and smoothed surfaces paired with metals, such as black steel or even glass and rotary cut veneer. Decor innovations such as the silhouetted glass decor ”Window”, steel decors or the expressive ”Terrazzo Nero” as well as diverse concrete variants represent casual industrial charm. ”Expressive wood species continue to characterise interior and furniture design. The trend here however is for light, natural wood species with balanced, more muted grain and figure”, said Gebert. Decors such as Light Portland Ash impart lightness and freshness. Recommended combinations include cool grey tones and textile surface textures. Pfleiderer summarises this rather Nordic, unpretentious lifestyle as Authenticity & Artisanship. Pfleiderer also presented its textures portfolio, which can be combined with the large number of decors. Including new textures such as the grainy pearlescent texture Sandpearl and the universal rust texture Corrosio. ”The rough, vivid material texture of Corrosio is reminiscent of corroded metal. With its overall matt, broken-up surface, it is primed by a semi-matt shimmering substrate”, explained Gebert. The new texture is particularly authentic with metal decors such as steel, bronze or even gold. ”With Sandpearl we have achieved a modern development of our successful Miniperl texture. It is matt and subtle, so that it lends particular noblesse and modernity, especially to material and plain decors”, added Gebert. The Pfleiderer Design collection is unique in the world of wood-based panels: With far more than 360 decors, of which 300 decors as well as 21 surface textures in the composite of melamine facing and HPL, any number of combinations can be created. In addition, 20 core materials are available to choose from. These include wood-based panels for classic furniture making and interior finishes, fixtures and fittings, fire protection and moisture-resistant boards as well as the special Pfleiderer cores such as BalanceBoard for lightweight construction and LivingBoard for ecological building. www.pfleiderer.com No. 3 • August 2019 33
