TOOLS 20 Percent Less

TOOLS 20 Percent Less Panel Processing Costs DT Premium Compact Hogger At LIGNA, Leitz presented its new diamond tipped DT Premium compact hogger with optimized cutting geometry, improved chip removal and additional damping elements. The precision tool manufacturer from Oberkochen is thus replacing its proven DT PLUS product and enabling users in the furniture industry to achieve significant increases in productivity and efficiency. New Leitz DT Premium Compact Hogger - 20 Percent Less Panel Processing Costs Individual customer requirements, the increasing variety of decors and the increasing proportion of waste wood in the panel material, confront manufacturing companies with new challenges every day. The associated numerous tool changes, downtimes, frequent material changes and fast wearing tools make it difficult for manufacturing companies to keep processing costs low, but at the same time to keep output and quality constantly high. The new DT Premium compact hogger from Leitz offers protection in such scenarios. Compared to the previous model DT PLUS, the advantages of the further development DT Premium are obvious. With a significantly longer life time, impressive results were achieved in the long-term test at various Leitz customers in terms of productivity and effectivity. Equally important, the long life time also has an effect on the efficiency of the tool. Fewer tool changes and downtime in series productions as well as the permanent usability in batch size 1 production, make it possible to reduce machining costs by up to 20 percent. The constant cutting width after sharpening, the perfect edges and smooth cutting surfaces are further quality features that prove that the new DT Premium compact hogger offers a convincing price-performance ratio. The new compact hogger is also convincing from the point of view of sustainability. The resharpenability has been significantly increased to 15 sharpening cycles and the specially developed tool design reduces annoying noise and avoids vibrations Highly Flexible Profile Change on HOMAG Edge Banding Machines Leitz presented its most technically complex new development flexTrim3. The new pneumatically switchable tool system contains three different edge profiles, which can be used as required. Developed especially for HOMAG units, hardly any tool solution offers more flexibility and efficiency in the field of edge processing than the flexTrim3. The continuing consumer demand for individual furniture is also reflected in the processes of the manufacturing companies. Small series or batch size one have been established manufacturing concepts in the industry for years with a high variety of materials and workpieces. However, it is precisely the resulting demands on processes, machines and tools that keep furniture manufacturers on the move every day. After all, for the manifold requirements, appropriate solutions have to be found in each individual process step, provided that the processing costs are kept within reasonable limits. Especially the tasks in edge finishing, such as flexible fine jointing, longitudinal profiling or corner copy shaping, often become a challenge. The increasing variability of the workpieces to be machined shows that every change in the workpiece always involves time-consuming tool replacement work. The new flexTrim3 profile cutter from Leitz provides a solution in such situations. The developers from Oberkochen have created a solution by combining three profiles in one tool system and additionally enabling the automatic profile change within a few seconds. Without exchanging the complete tool system. This means triple flexibility in profile selection, more efficiency due to less downtime during tool change and lower investment costs, as fewer units are required for additional tools. The tool costs themselves can also be significantly reduced with the flexTrim3. The 3-in-1 concept reduces the primary acquisition costs for several tools and due to the reusable tool body, profiles only have to be replaced or exchanged. The technical basis of the flexTrim3 is a precise switching mechanism. Located inside the tool body and protected from external influences, the individual switching positions with the desired profile are thus brought into operation precisely at the push of a button. This makes fine adjustment after changing the profile unnecessary. With regard to profile types, all customer-specific profiles up to a depth of 3 mm can be produced on the profile rings. Even the combination of with feed and against feed running or bevelling of edges is individually possible up to 45 degrees with the system. The flexTrim3 system can also be used universally in the materials to be processed. Softwood, hardwood, veneer or plastic edge bands can be processed reliably and in best quality. On the machine side, the new flexTrim3 system can be used especially on HOMAG FF32 units. The New TurboPlan PLUS - Machine Tuning for Planing Lines Specially developed for high-performance planing, Leitz will be presenting its latest product from the range of hydro cutterheads at this year’s LIGNA. The new TurboPlan PLUS is a further development of the proven TurboPlan cutterhead product range. The new, weight-optimized system is characterized by significantly higher feed speeds and by its proven simple and reliable knife clamping. A solution that promises more productivity and efficiency while maintaining the same high machining quality. The requirements placed on processes in joinery plants are fundamentally described by terms such as feed rate, quality and time. Today, modern high-performance planing machines are designed for high feed rates. However, it is difficult, to maximize the performance of these machines and achieve the required finish qualities if the tools used are unsuitable for such applications. In order for the corresponding quality to be achieved at high feed rates, planing tools must meet special requirements. The number of knives and their form-fitting installation are important points that come into play here and push conventional planer systems to their limits. Knife adaptors must withstand high forces. However, the wedge clamping widely used in many systems requires a lot of space. This in turn means a limited number of knives that can be mounted on the tool. A cycle, that is further intensified by the fact that the readjustment during servicing or the replacement of worn knives can only be carried out with a great deal of time. All in all, this results in low 18 No. 3 • August 2019

TOOLS Leitz compact hogger DT Premium ‐ maximum efficiency due to long life time. The new flexTrim3 from Leitz. The new TurboPlan PLUS from Leitz. Photos: Leitz productivity values and ultimately high processing costs. A situation, that nobody can afford in the long run. The new TurboPlan PLUS hydro planer cutterhead from Leitz promises true machine tuning in such cases. With this tooling system, the potential of high-performance systems can be fully used. The basis of this further developed system is the space-saving, hydraulic simultaneous clamping with back-serrated knives, which was already used in the proven TurboPlan product series. However, the developers at Leitz have managed to significantly increase the productivity of this planing system. There is, for example, the increased number of knives, that turn a powerful planing system into a high-performance planing system. Up to 20 cutting edges, for example, are mounted in a 250 mm diameter planing head with positive locking and finally make high surface finishes a reality at feed speeds of up to 300 m/min. In terms of efficiency, fast and safe knife replacement is another advantage. A knife exchange can be carried out in just a few simple steps, reducing set-up times by up to 80 percent. Another PLUS are the numerous advantages in terms of sustainability. All the lead is taken by the three to fivefold performance time achieved by the resistant high-performance Marathon coating compared to uncoated HS knives. Furthermore the weight of the tool body has been reduced by about thirty percent. This not only protects the machine, but above all makes handlig easier for the user in the truest sense of the word. www.leitz.org Pioneer in Technology of PCD Sharpening by Laser Ablation ITA TOOLS Company is a Polish manufacturer of professional cutting tools located in Cracow with Production and Service center in Mielec Special Industrial Zone and warehouse in Wieliczka. In total, ITA TOOLS employs over 120 workers and offers a wide range of tools for woodworking industry, furniture production and processing composite materials Laser ablation works by focusing a laser onto a substrate to a remove material that is on it’s surface. The amount that is removed depends on the intensity, pulse length, and wavelength of the laser, as well as the material itself. The area absorbs the laser that is being directed on it, thereby breaking down the chemical bonds within the area. Laser ablation is a much more efficient, reliable and cost-effective method. www.ita.tools Laser ablation has many benefits over more traditional methods of Sharpening processes, such as: • The sharpening area doesn’t warmup • Ultimate precision especially for DIA profile cutting edges, thanks a laser we are able to sharp any angle • Possibility to sharpening chip breakers • After Laser ablation the cutting blade is more acute, the laser cuts not eroding • The laser cuts PCD and binder concurrent • Simple processing of coarse PCD • Expanding tools life • Not harmful for ecology No. 3 • August 2019 19
