Vitalstoffe ist die erste Zeitschrift in deutscher Sprache, die sich zum Ziel setzt, umfassend über die Roh- und Wirkstoffe in Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln sowie über deren Darreichungsformen zu berichten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Produktion und Mischung von Rohstoffen und deren Wirkung auf die menschliche Gesundheit. Wissenschaftlich fundierte Informationen und Studien bieten die Möglichkeit der Aufklärung, die durch die Health Claims Verordnung immer schwieriger geworden ist. Leser sind Anbieter von Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln, Vermarkter, Lohnhersteller und Rohstoffhersteller bis hin zum Point of Sales sowie Ärzte, Ernährungsspezialisten und Apotheker.

Andere glauben, dass sie sich bei normaler Sehkraft, im Hinblick auf die Sehschärfe, auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer möglichen Sehleistung befinden. Beides ist nicht immer zutreffend. Manchmal reicht es bereits, regelmäßig bestimmte Lebensmittel in den Speiseplan aufzunehmen oder täglich ein Nahrungsergänzungsmittel zu nehmen, um die Augen gesund zu erhalten. Dies gilt insbesondere in der heutigen Zeit, in der unsere Augen in jedem Alter und insbesonders in jungen Jahren nicht nur der normalen Sonneneinstrahlung, sondern auch durch den verstärkten Einsatz digitaler Bildschirme künstlichen Lichtquellen ausgesetzt werden. Sowohl Sonnenlicht als auch digitale Geräte setzen das Auge energiereichem blauem Licht (400 nm – 500 nm) aus, welches mit Augenschädigungen und verminderter Sehleistung in Verbindung gebracht werden kann (1). Die neuen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse der letzten drei Jahrzehnte legen nahe, dass Lutein und Zeaxanthin essentielle Nährstoffe sind, wenn es um die Förderung der Augengesundheit und -funktion geht (2). Lutein und Zeaxanthin Lutein und Zeaxanthin sind Nicht-Provitamin-A-Carotinoide, die oft in Nahrungsmitteln vorkommen. In der Natur findet man diese Moleküle entweder als an Fettsäuren gebundene Form (Luteinester) oder häufig als freie Form (Lutein). Fast 93% des Luteins und Zeaxanthins, das in den typischen Lebensmitteln von Menschen vorkommt, sind in der Form von freiem Lutein vorhanden (3). Gute Quellen für Lutein und Zeaxanthin sind dunkelgrünes Blattgemüse wie Spinat, Brokkoli und Grünkohl, wobei diese Carotinoide auch in Eigelb, Mais und Orangenpfeffer zu finden sind. Lutein und Zeaxanthin können nicht im menschlichen Körper aus anderen Stoffen synthetisiert werden und müssen deshalb aus Nahrungsquellen zugeführt werden (4). Einmal im Körper angekommen, sind Lutein und Zeaxanthin durch die Verteilung über den Blutkreislauf in verschiedenen wichtigen Organen präsent. Im Vergleich zu anderen Carotinoiden hat man eine auffällige Konzentration von Lutein und Zeaxanthin im Auge, im Gehirn und auch in der Muttermilch (5 – 7) festgestellt.
