Pumps and Systems

Pumps and Systems Intelligent pump technology Automatic adjustable pump makes life easier in WWTP Intelligent pump technology facilitates more sustainable operation at WWTP in Gelsenkirchen, Germany It's all a matter of adjustment: Municipal water supply is experiencing a smooth transition into the digital age and is becoming more sustainable. Intelligent pump technology from SEEPEX makes them fit for the future. One of the world’s leading specialists in progressive cavity pumps, pump systems and digital solutions was able to solve various technical challenges and help save time as well as energy in a municipal WWTP. The special feature of the pump is the digitally monitored, automated adjustment of the pumping elements. The SCT AutoAdjust increases the pump’s service life, leads to lower energy and resource consumption, increases operational reliability and process efficiency, and reduces maintenance requirements. sees “high savings potential in the more than 10,000 municipal WWTPs. These are responsible for an aver age of almost 20 percent of the electricity consumption of all municipal facilities.” Among the consumers with Saving energy, preserving resources, in short: sustainable behavior is on everyone’s mind. This applies, in particular, to the field of environmental technology. The German Federal Environment Agency, for example, Fig. 2: Installation of a BN35-6LAS with pump monitor at a plant. Hydraulically adjustable and highly precise all at the touch of a button. high power consumption are “the continuously running pumps.” “With the automated progressive cavity pump, SEEPEX has been able to demonstrate, using the Gelsenkirchen WWTP as an example, that the investment in the new technology pays off both economically and for the climate,” says the Head of Product Mana gement, giving a positive summary after two years. Requirements placed on modern pump technology are getting more demanding in many places. Pumps and Systems Intelligent pump technology ther improved. The high viscosity of the sewage sludge and the highly abrasive dry matter content - in this case of around 3 to 4 percent at a flow rate of 5 to 7 m³/h and 2 to 6 bar back pressure - have an increasing effect on energy requirements and wear, making it a demanding conveying task. In the past, the pump’s performance decreased over time because the stator and rotor - as in many sewage treatment plants - are subject to high abrasive wear. At constant speed, wear becomes noticeable in a steadily accelerating decrease in flow rate. The reduced flow rate can be compensated for by increasing the speed. However, this leads to an increased energy demand of the pump and an exponential increase in the wear rate. In addition to increased operating costs, this leads to a shortened rotor and stator life, increased downtime, more resource requirements and higher costs for spare parts and maintenance. Perfect operating point at the push of a button As part of the municipal water management system, the WWTP in the north of the city is responsible for treating the wastewater of a population of more than 57,000 in this region. The pump manufacturer from Bottrop replaced its standard progressing cavity pump, previously used here in discontinuous operation, with state-of-the-art technology. Fig. 3: The flow rate per rotor revolution is scaled to the set point or optimal operating point. 100 % stands for the optimal required operating point of the pump. The pump should run between 80 % and 100 % (green area) due to normal operating conditions. “The auto mated pump combines a new type of hydraulic adjustment unit with simultaneous digital moni toring and control, making it the world’s first progressive cavity pump that automatically (Auto) adjusts its operating point (Adjust) at the push of a button,” says the Head of Product Management, explaining the prin ciple. In this way, it can compensate for any wear that occurs and always operates at maximum efficiency at the optimum operating point. The new technology made it possible by using a smaller sized pump, including a less energy consuming drive than before, resulting in lower costs in terms of resources and energy. Real-time data at a glance The modern pump can be operated from the control room, on a tablet or smartphone. Long distances for control and maintenance are a thing of the past. The SCT AutoAdjust is equipped with an innovative hydraulic adjustment unit with associated sensor technology which, together with the digital connection of the pump (Pump Monitoring and Connected Services), enables automated adjustment of the stator clamping. The stator clamping is performancedetermining for the operation of the pump and can now always be optimally adjusted to the operating conditions. The digital connection is established via sensors, which record important parameters such as flow rate, pressure, rotor speed or temperature in real time and analyzes them in Connected Services using modern algorithms and artificial intelligence. In this way, the operating status of the pump can be monitored regardless of location.
