Pumps and Systems Energy-saving conveying technology retrofit the valve control system for compressed air injection with the system logic for plug conveyance. This fundamentally changes the type of pneumatic conveyance making it a lot more energy-efficient. Ultimately, these plants are run continuously to produce an uninterrupted flow of “liquid gold”. The progressive cavity pumps play a significant part in allowing the distilleries to considerably increase their production volume with no compromise on quality. Faster spent grains removal facilitates higher production utilization, so that the increasing demand for the noble liquor can be satisfied. In most cases the supplier replaces the screw conveyor of an existing pneumatic conveying system for wet spent grains by its progressive cavity pump with intake hopper. It can reliably convey both low and highly viscous products with low or high moisture content. Depending on the moisture content, the technology made in Germany reduces the time required for spent grains removal by up to 50 %. Even for existing systems it is possible to Technical facts and figures During the individual process optimization phase the pump manufacturer team gradually establishes the optimal operating status for the brewery or distillery by successively adapting the plug length of the wet spent grains. The longer the plug, the rarer the system needs compressed air thus consuming fewer standard cubic meters. The operational reliability is not a problem here, since a sufficient pressure reserve is always available. The length of the spent grains plug is crucial for achieving the optimal operating point in terms of reliability and efficiency. For example, shorter plugs provide more reliability but inevitably increase the injection frequency, which leads to higher compressed air consumption and thus more energy demand. The challenge is to find the optimal setting for every application by balancing the magic triangle of high performance, reliability and costs. Lengthening the plug helps to gradually minimize the average compressed air consumption. Throttling the air volume flow rate may also help to optimize the pneumatic flow properties, because the plug flow becomes smoother so that the pulse forces can be reduced. In addition, the optimal air consumption (Nm 3 per injection) can thus be set more easily. Here, the required standard cubic meters of compressed air per injection are almost identical with the pipe volume so that only a slight overpressure is needed to push the plug to the silo, even over a long distance. SAI: Ideal system for long distances The tailor-made system solution is successful already in other applications and, for example, is seen as a recognized solution also in the environmental sector, where highly viscous media with a high consistency and a medium-to-high dry matter content are reliably conveyed over long distances of up to one kilometer. The system is a combination of product conveyance via a progressive cavity pump and dense phase pneumatic conveying. Its high process flexibility is ensured by the smooth media pumping with a variable moisture content of 60 to 85 percent - without compromising its efficiency.
