In many cases, they use biotics to support their pet’sdigestive or gastrointestinal concerns 2 .“The popularity of functional ingredientshas increased as pet owners seek waysto improve the health and wellness oftheir pets, yet limited research has beenconducted regarding the use of probioticsand postbiotics and their effects oncanine health,” said Sophie Nixon, Ph.D.,Head of Clinical Research for Pet & AnimalWell-being at ADM, who oversaw the trial. For this exploratorystudy, 18 adult beaglesand 18 adult Englishpointers were used ina 3-arm randomized,placebo-controlled, parallelgroup design, with12 animals per group.Following a 60-dayadaptation period inwhich dogs were feda standard diet alone, the dogs were thensupplemented witheither probiotic orpostbiotic BPL1 oran identical placeboalongside theirstandard diet for 90days. Measurementswere taken to assessoutcome measuresrelating to a variety ofhealth areas, includingfecal fermentativeend products andmicrobiome, insulinsensitivity, serum guthormones, oxidativestress, inflammatorybiomarkers andwhite blood cell geneexpression.Improvements were observed in fecalshort-chain fatty acids, as well aschanges in microbiome compositionand the functional metagenome, whencompared to placebo control. Data fromthe trial shows that both the live andheat-treated forms of BPL1 can safely besupplemented in healthy adult dogs andsupport several aspects of gut health. Afurther clinical study is ongoing to assessadditional physiological outcomes, witha focus on metabolic health.“Groundbreaking science such as thiscanine trial spurs development ofADM’s functional ingredients acrosshuman, pet and animal nutrition,” saidMark Lotsch, ADM’s President of GlobalHealth & Wellness. “Beneficial outcomesand ingredient stability of our awardwinningBPL1 solution have beenrepeatedly demonstrated in previoushuman clinical trials. We are thrilled toalso see promising results for pet healthapplications.”Because heat-treated BPL1 has asimilar effect to live BPL1 in healthyadult dogs, pet product formulatorswill have greater flexibility through themanufacturing and supply process, asthey don’t need to make adaptations forliving microorganisms 3 . Notably, extremeheat from extrusion and baking commonin pet food processing can diminish theefficacy of live probiotics. As inanimatemicroorganisms, postbiotics can confer ahealth benefit on the host despite thesechallenging conditions.Technology & MarketingPhotos: ADM14Technology & Marketing
