Case study: Puppy health The bitch's endotheliochorial-type placenta is almost completely impermeable to large molecules, such as immunoglobulins. This explains why the puppies are born with a very low circulating level of IgG, of the order of 0.3 g / L (against 8 to 25 g / L in an adult dog). It is the intake of colostrum which allows the acquisition of passive immunity, so that the puppy's serum IgG concentration will reach approximately 6 g/L 48 hours after ingestion of a good quality colostrum; 85 to 95% of the puppy's circulating Ig are therefore of colostral origin. (Mila, Grellet, & Feugier, 2015). This supply of Ig, potentiated by colostral antitrypsins, represents the most specific role of colostrum and is a determining factor in the survival of puppies, since neonatal mortality is predominantly of infectious origin. MSP immunity, has been shown to optimize the transudation of seral Ig to the mammary glands and secure a higher passive transfer of both IgG and IgA to the progeny thus resulting in lower neo-mortality and morbidity. In view of the benefits of both those MSP, the practical application and recommended feeding rate is 0.3% : - first commencing with the junior puppy/kitten from 2 to 6 months to promote immunity development and resilience as well as preventing digestive troubles. - Supplementation can be maintained for adult pets to support immunity and gut health, with a particular interest for breeders and active dogs. - Add to Seniors to strengthen declining defences and reduce inflammatory processes.
