The Hammer Mill for High Economic Efficiency PROCESSING Fine grinding is a key step in the production of pet food, especially in the premium segment. The better the raw materials are ground, the higher the gelatinization, and the better cats and dogs can digest and absorb the nutrients. At the same time, for the manufacturer efficiency plays a central role, which is heavily determined by energy consumption and throughput. In extensive tests together with a leading pet food producer, Bühler has now been able to prove that the new Granulex 5 hammer mill has reached a new level in terms of quality, energy efficiency, and productivity. For producers in the rapidly growing pet food market, this means not only a better return on investment and higher margins but also significant advantages in terms of the CO2e footprint of their products. For decades, Bühler’s older generation hammer mills provided excellent service in many grinding applications and were listed as standard by leading manufacturers in the pet food industry. Building on the extensive experience and knowledge gained from all of its older hammer mill models, Bühler embarked on the development of the successor model, the Granulex 5, and its associated components, including those required for fine grinding in pet food applications. The advantages of all the previous systems were to be combined in the new machine. The new model was launched in 2022 and boasted many improvements: better energy efficiency, higher throughput performance, modular design, a wide variety of options tailored to customer needs, and reduced downtime due to faster screen and hammer changes. Energy savings for feed applications (coarse grinding), have been found to be, on average, 10%. the comparability of the data collected. Four different formulas were selected that were then ground both on the customer’s existing equipment and on the Granulex 5 at Bühler’s Application Center in Changzhou, China. At Bühler, various configurations were tested in 56 test series, processing a total of 16 tonnes of raw material. The number of trials carried out and the amount of material ground ensured that the findings were not distorted by any random effects. The results surprised specialists both on the customer’s side and at Bühler. Highest fine grinding quality As a basis for all parameters, it was crucial to be able to ensure the pet food manufacturer’s very fine granulation specifications and other requirements (for throughput performances and narrow particle size distribution) with Benjamin Schrempf joined the Bühler AG in 2011 and has extensive practical experience in the commissioning of grinding systems, particularly in the pet food and aqua feed industries. Since 2017, he has been calculating machines, systems and complete plants in the pet food and aqua feed sector as a process engineer and, thanks to his expertise in fine grinding, has played a key role in the development and standardization of the new system. The results presented in the article were determined during various customer trials at the site in China and the complete system was then further developed based on the results and various customer requirements. the Granulex 5. The ground material was analyzed both by weight using a hand sieve and by laser diffraction with the “Horiba Partica” measurement apparatus according to Fraunhofer. Data relating to quality, energy consumption, and throughput has now been reviewed in detail for the various market segments. This was driven in part by the wishes of a leading global manufacturer of pet food that was planning to switch from the outgoing model to the Granulex 5 and wanted to ensure that the decision could be made based on objective measurements. In a collaborative effort between the pet food manufac turer and Bühler, a joint test design was developed to ensure Photos: Bühler Group Issue 2 2025 21
