INGREDIENTS High-Quality Petfood Needs Good and Trustworthy Suppliers of Raw Materials Photos: animalPro nutrition GmbH PetFood Pro recently talked with Sandra Stuhr, Sales Director at animalPro nutrition GmbH in Bad Oldesloe, Germany. The company has decades of experience in international food and feed ingredients trade for the European market and aims to improve the animal feed industry, making it fairer for producers, more reliable for manufacturers and more valuable for animals. What do you consider to be particularly important in animal nutrition? Pets as well as farm animals should be fed the required amounts of nutrients according to their needs. Furthermore, the feed should be as free as possible from undesirable substances and environmental toxins, such as heavy metals, pesticides and fungicides. Product safety is our top priority. Have you observed any changes in the market in recent years, if so, which ones? In addition to grain-free ingredients such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, millet, amaranth and tapioca, which have been used in premium feeds for many years, we are increasingly seeing the use of so-called "functional" and "superfood ingredients", some of which are linked to health-promoting effects from the human sector. These include algae, plant extracts and herbs, but also pre- and probiotics. How do you think animal feed production will develop or change in the coming years? A lot of work is currently being done on the development of alternative protein sources. In particular, the area of insect proteins is being researched more intensively. The supply of proteins from meat by-products has been declining, not at least due to the pandemic, and the trend towards vegetarian and vegan diets is more an expression of the consumer's critical attitude towards livestock farming. We believe this will contribute to shortages in the supply of raw materials for pet food production. In addition, we are observing an increasing valorization of slaughter products into the food sector. Here, the pet food industry is increasingly competing with food manufacturers. 8 Technology & Marketing
