INGREDIENTS only the best is good enough for their furry friends. In Maximilian’s opinion, a more sustainably formulated feed has the best chance of actually providing “added value.” He says: “The products need to be high-quality, well tolerated and accepted by the animal itself, and be just as healthy as conventional products. At the same time, it must also contain more sustainably sourced, plantbased ingredients.” Often, the greatest concern is that the pet will not like the meat analogue. “I’m happy to dispel this fear,” adds Maximilian: “TVP [texturized vegetable protein] from wheat is neutral in taste and smell and takes on the taste of the rest of the components of the feed.” Technological advantages The wheat-based texturized proteins from the Trigovit® Tex range perfectly replicate the textures of many meats and even fish. Available as chunks, flakes, granules, fibres and in powder form, they can also be processed with meat to create hybrid products with improved nutritional value and stability. For example, they can be used in dry kibbles, as a fibrous component in feed croquettes or to give a special twist to treats. Additionally, they can act as the solid particles in semi-moist applications and give a firm texture to wet pet food. dry products that can be individually hydrated,” says Hegge: “Depending on the ratio of water to dry texturate, the firmness can be adapted so that it matches the requirements of the product. Finding the right texture can be challenging, but we’re here to help and answer any questions.” Compared with meat products, handling dry raw materials is less problematic. It requires no special storage conditions and is simply added to the feed when dry. And whereas sufficient water must be available to ensure complete hydration, no additional equipment is required for processing. Nutritional value Traditionally, reflecting what wild cats and wolves eat, the primary source of pet food has always been meat. Yet, with the constantly increasing global demand for protein, plant-based varieties are rising in popularity because cultivation is generally less resource-intensive. In a sustainable supply chain, there is a strong case for using the nutrients contained in wheat and other cereals directly … and not using them as feed for livestock. Proteins play a crucial role in supporting a healthy metabolism. And whereas dogs must have an adequate supply of proteins to maintain their body muscles, the not provide a completely balanced diet5. Supplementation with vegetable protein, in the form of wheat-based TVP, for example, could therefore be useful. “Ultimately, however, owners should refer to a trained veterinarian to determine the individual needs of their cat or dog. Plantbased supplements in pet food, or even individual vegan meals within a diversified diet, are just that – supplements,” advises Hegge. Extruded and functional To make texturized protein, an extruder is used. A base material is pressed through a previously defined die by applying pressure and temperature. The subsequently shaped intermediate offers a multitude of design possibilities for the end product. Furthermore, process parameters and the composition of the raw material mixture can be adapted to influence both the form and the nutritional composition and colour of the extrudates. The production of texturized proteins does, though, require special technological know-how and profound raw material expertise. As Trigea is part of the Crespel & Deiters Group, one of the leading wheat processors in Europe, the team boasts both the necessary skills and access to a reliable source of high-quality raw materials. With no meat at all (as pictured) or mixed with meat, dogs will not notice the difference. (Copyright: Crespel & Deiters) Regarding technological advantages, TVP benefits from a consistent level of quality that outcompetes most animal derivatives. First, it’s very important that the ingredients are sterilization-stable because canned feed, in particular, is usually autoclaved at a temperature of 120°C or higher. “We provide TVP as needs of cats are much higher3. As more research is done on plant-based diets, studies show that even carnivorous cats can metabolise at least small amounts of plant-based raw materials4. Dogs, by contrast, are considered to be omnivores. As such, meat alone does The company only uses European wheat that is free from genetically modified components and characterised by reliable availability and short transport distances. By covering the entire supply chain, every stage of processing can be controlled and adapted as required: the grain is split into separate components at the company’s 22 Technology & Marketing

headquarters in Germany, whereas the protein-rich fractions are extruded at the group’s own plant in the Netherlands. As physical processes are not declarable, only the raw materials used can be listed on the label, such as wheat gluten and wheat flour, which makes the textured wheat proteins of the Trigovit® Tex range a declaration-friendly ingredient. The process of extrusion breaks down the wheat proteins, which further improves digestibility. Origin and purpose Through further development and research into extrusion technology, many more product innovations are bound to reach the market. It goes without saying that the potential for extrudates is far from exhausted. Hybrid products give sustainability minded shoppers the chance to make better decisions when shopping for both themselves and their pets. Furthermore, it also enables manufacturers to increase their product portfolio and contribute to the circular economy. Thanks to advanced and highly functional ingredients such as texturates, the innovative new products of the future can be delivered using the production technologies of today to improve the health and well-being of consumers, their pets and the planet.
