PetFood PRO is the international magazine for executives and specialists in the manufacture of food for domestic animals – the pet food industry. The magazine focuses on food and delicacies for dogs, cats and other small animals, ornamental birds and fish, as well as animals kept in terrariums. We publish feature articles, reports and announcements about new ingredients, technology, equipment and processes, packaging machinery and materials as well as marketing trends and developments. INGREDIENTS What do you see as the biggest challenges in the pet food sector? When sourcing raw materials, especially from non-European countries, there is always the risk of contamination with residues that exceed the legal values of the corresponding EU regulations. Here, a close-meshed control system, which starts with the selection of suppliers and extends to the analysis of purchased raw materials, is enormously important. In our opinion, a close connection to professional associations and quality standard setters is very important. However, it is always ultimately the responsibility of the companies involved in the supply chain to constantly monitor product quality. What about the ability to deliver in the face of changing global challenges? The pandemic in particular and the temporary interruption of supply flows have shown how important it is to have good and trustworthy suppliers who, despite the difficult situation, do their utmost to supply the industry with the raw materials in the required quality. Here it is important to act together with foresight and ensure that sufficient quantities can always be made available for production. What do you think research should or could focus on in the coming years? The effects of plant extracts and functional raw materials, especially in animal nutrition, are far from being fully developed; in our opinion, there is still a great deal of potential here. What does “wholesome” nutrition mean for certain animals? For pets, wholesome nutrition means a plus in well-being, a well-groomed outer appearance and agility. Do you think organic food in jars for cats is excessive or is it good? I think this is a personal decision that each pet owner should make for themselves. What should be fed additionaly in certain intervalls? This is very individual depending on the basic care of the animal, as well as the age and breed and cannot be explained in a few words. Here, good advice should be given by the specialized trade or the veterinarian. Pet food manufacturers also offer a lot of information and advice here.
