Ingredients A More

Ingredients A More Sustainable BARF Diet: Possibilities for Feed Components and Packaging Near-natural nutrition following BARF diet principles, which is as conducive to the health of pets as it is to the health of our planet Earth – there are numerous options available for sustainability-conscious pet parents: from certified fish oils to green-lipped mussel powder to vegan, resource-saving alternatives such as protein flours and algae. There are also different possibilities as regards packaging. The UN’s 17 sustainable development goals came into effect in 2016. Natural feeding components contribute to achieving these goals. Read in this article more about the positive impacts of the mentioned products. Jan-Christoph Morisse – Head of Animal Nutrition and Care at Henry Lamotte Oils. Henry Lamotte Oils is a leading quality supplier for natural oils and related products such as vegetable butters, waxes, seed flour and oleoresins. The company’s own Oil Mill Lipos mainly processes certified organic seeds to oil, protein flours and press cakes. A more sustainable BARF diet: beyond meat, fruits and vegetables The Biologically Appropriate Raw Food Diet – BARF diet for short – is becoming more and more popular among pet parents. They associate it with nearnatural nutrition for dogs and increasingly also cats, which they prepare at home and in which they can influence the feed components. BARF takes as its starting point the diet of carnivorous animals living in the wild. Accordingly, the most important feed constituents are meat, bones and giblets. Small quantities of fruit and vegetables are intended to imitate the stomach contents of small pray animals. There is no place for processed foods in this diet. Technology & Marketing Technology & Marketing Technology & Marketing Technology & Marketing One might wonder: Why does a dog need oils, algae and alike in their natural nutrition, whereas wild canines like the fox do not get it? Feeding dogs and cats with farmed meat and farmed fish does, due to the nutrition of the breeding animals, not ensure the supply of nutrients such as essential fatty acids to pets to the same extent as feeding with meat from wildlife. The meat of wild animals contains many times more omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a favorable ratio compared to breeding animals. This is a result of a wild animals’ diet of, for example, grass and meadow flowers. From the spectrum of natural feed components for BARF For optimally fulfilling the nutritional needs of dogs and cats in a BARF diet and thus maintaining their health, the following products made from natural raw ingredients are examples for suitable feed constituents: Fish oils and fish liver oils Perna canaliculus (green-lipped mussel powder) Algae oils and algae powders Protein press cakes and flours Fish oils and fish liver oils Fish oils have a unique fatty acid pattern with long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which the animal as well as the human body cannot produce completely on their own. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid,C20:5) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, C22:6) have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and are involved in many metabolic processes. This is also underlined by the health claims for humans reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which are essentially transferable to animal nutrition. These are examples how fish oils and fish liver oils contribute to the SDGs of the United Nations: They contribute to the main idea behind upcycling, namely the complete use of all components of a raw material. From the resource fish, one can obtain more than just the fillet for human consumption – in the sense of a sustainable, careful use of nature’s resources. Different certifications can be applied to fish oils: • According to the MarinTrust Standard, fisheries must operate in accordance with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. At sea, this contributes to the long-term conservation of fish stocks by not catching too many young fish before they had the chance to reproduce. There is also transparency about the fishing area. • Fish oils with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) seal, with which end consumers are mostly familiar, are not widely available. 6 Technology & Marketing
