SHOWCASE Wilbert

SHOWCASE Wilbert Vandecorput, OPEM Many bags are pre-made. Opem is exploring the challenges of reel. Reels take less space and save transport energy. Materials change from paper to recyclable plastic. Petfood packaging aims to differentiate. There is some overlap with other network members, but differences. Opem is a specialist with spouts for packages. What is the special attraction of this network for you? OPEM is a relative newcomer in the petfood market. Italian supplier from Parma, supplying primary packaging machines mainly to the coffeemarket (bags (soft or vacuum), pods, capsules, cans).Latest innovation in coffee bean packaging (bag with screw-cap, machine OTELLO) very interesting as a new packaging for petfood. Which advantages are to be expected through the PetFood Competence Network a) for the companies involved and b) for the producers of pet food? A) Sharing market & product know-how B) "One-stop-shopping" convenience, using our expertise, also on the packaging materials used on our machines (biobased, compostable and now mainly recyclable mono-laminates PE or PP based) What demands do pet food manufacturers make on suppliers to this industry? Is it different for raw materials, equipment or packaging manufacturers? Trend is towards sustainability: Re-duce, Re-cycle are the 2 main pillars on which OPEM can help • less energy consumption with our primary packaging equipment • reduced change-over times • recyclable packaging materials on our equipment What will be the biggest challenges in the production and packaging of pet food in the next five years? The Petfood market is very much a high-end market, like coffee. Convenience is key. Using also expensive packaging. Innovations in packaging sometimes even are introduced sooner in petfood than in human food. Our challenge will be the move towards mono-laminates based on either PE or PP that can be 100% recyclable. For OPEM to convince petfood producers to move to packaging equipment starting from reel with benefits in: • warehousing, energy • transport of reels vs pre-made bags • cost reduction (material in reel is around 25-30% less than the same material in the pre-made bag form • easy change-over formats (the main reason why now Petfood producers choose pre-made bags, but we have possibilities to make change-overs more easy also with machines starting from reels) • efficiency of the line • remote servicing, e.g. Digital Monitoring Systems (Industry 4.0) Do you have a pet yourself? What is your biggest wish for this special member of the family? I have a Labradoodle, called Bobbie. My biggest wish would be to feed him with food from my packaging material produced on OPEM equipment with a recyclable material of which I know it will indeed be recycled. 32 Technology & Marketing
