Ingredients of rice and curd a bit, adding cooked vegetable purree and some seed mixes will make curd rice more balanced and nutritional. My dog steals potatoes. Is it good for him? What are the other veggies a dog can eat? Well, if your dog eats them and is digesting them well, its great! All dogs are different, Some dogs develop acute gastric problems when fed plant based foods and fibrous foods. Potatoes can not be the main meal for your dog but are okay as a snack or treat. In case you add a grain such as rice or wheat to your dog's food in any form, the quantity of the grains can be reduced in order to make up for the carbohydrates received through potatoes. Other veggies that dogs can eat are broccoli, peas, beans (in limits), mushrooms, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin. What should I feed my 6 months old Labrador? I would like to feed home made food not packaged. Puppies need a diet rich protein as well as calcium. Feed good sources of protein like chicken, egg whites, fish, soya or tofu. Make sure you provide adequate calcium to your puppy (add 1/4th tsp of egg shell powder a day) or a bit of bone meal powder to his food. Puppies should be fed more frequently than adult dogs and must be fed at least 3 meals a day. What diet is the best for my dog – raw, cooked or kibble? Every pet is different and just like there is no one diet for people, there cannot be one same diet for all dogs. Pet parents have to play and experiment with their pets. The experiments should be monitored and done in line with the safety of the pet. Suggestions from a pet nutritionist can be taken to adapt your pet to a new diet and evaluate his/her health post new diet. Can I give fruits to my dog? For a perfectly healthy dog, not having underlying conditions like diabetes or obesity, most fruits are good. Just avoid very sweet fruits like grapes. Fruits like papaya, apples, and blueberries are perfectly safe and beneficial for dogs. What supplements does my pet need? What supplements your pet needs depends upon the present diet of your dog. If your dog is on homemade diet, a calcium and vitamin d supplementation is a must. If your dog is a vegetarian, an amino acid supplementation is must; if your dog eats primarily meats, an omega 3 supplementation is must. How long can we feed puppy food to a dog? Puppies should be given puppy food until they have attained 90% of their expected adult weight; post this, they should be switched to adult dog food. How to feed a fussy eater? There is more than one solution to this problem. We can do many things like changing the texture of the food, changing its temperature or the time at which we are serving the food. How can I stop my dog from rushing his food at meal times? Rushing at meal times can be very risky for dogs as it causes them to gulp in air and bloat. Sometimes the bloating can be very serious and can cause the stomach to twist which is life threatening. Therefore it is important that dogs are encouraged to eat slowly. You can serve the food in a slow feeder or simply use a deeper bowl and put a ball in it. The dog will have to move the ball around to finish the food, making the process slower for him. How do I know that my dog is full? Some pets know when they are full, while some are complete gluttons! They love to eat to the last available bit. The best way to find out if your pet is eating more than required is to check him on the weighing scale. If your dog is a fully grown adult and is gaining weight beyond the expected maximum weight for his breed, he is eating more than required. Unless a dog is fussy, they will love their food and eat until the bowl is empty. How are macro requirements for dogs different to humans? Dogs also need all five macro nutrient groups (proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals). The difference is that dogs need more energy from protein and fats than from carbohydrates. Though, over time dogs have developed the ability to digest carbohydrates, they have to be prepared in the right way so dogs can digest them well. AAFCO standards suggest that adult dogs need at least 18% of protein on a dry matter basis. To make it simple, adult dogs should be fed a minimum 20% calories from protein. However when designing modern diets for dogs, the protein varies from 20% calories to as high as 40% calories from protein. Looking forward to serve your pets for their better health!
