editorial Eric Schäfer editor-in-chief Challenges… …as an opportunity. Surely this sounds like an advice for every situation. But it’s fitting for a time when the global economy is constantly going up and down, characterized by uncertainty and irrational decisions – talking about U.S. tariffs and the subsequent international reactions. It should be assumed that globally positioned and operating companies know how to deal with unexpected developments. Flexible responses and new long-term solutions are required now. New production technology solutions await visitors at the upcoming EMO in Hanover, where end-to-end process automation, precisely coordinated interfaces and integrated digitalization solutions for the modern factory will be on display. Machine tool manufacturers are leading the way here and are already equipping machines with extensive sensor and monitoring systems as standard. The goal is to make it easier for users to get started with data-driven production technologies that can visualize and optimize processes, as the EMO preview in this issue shows. Digitalization combined with sustainability are key factors in securing profitability. The current situation is therefore certainly a catalyst for the transformation of the industry. An additional aspect of the new global economic situation is the formation of new partnerships and alliances. Companies that thrive in a challenging environment are often more open to collaboration, whether with other companies, research institutions or even governments. Such partnerships can promote the exchange of knowledge and resources and enable innovative approaches to overcoming challenges. The fact is that markets that are protected from competition do not necessarily produce competitive products. Eric Schäfer editor-in-chief Coming up soon… no. 2, May 2025 3
