editorial Eric Schäfer editor-in-chief Have you ever done this? Played around with AI out of curiosity? You have probably encountered AI in your personal or professional life, whether you have experimented with it or used it without noticing. After all, AI is now implemented in many web applications, and it’s impossible to overlook the fact that it’s also finding its way into machine tools. This brings us to this year’s EMO. AI is one of the defining themes of the world’s leading trade fair for production technology. AI will change not only the maintenance of machines, but the entire production process. It will become the control center for more efficient, sustainable and competitive manufacturing. AI in machine tools means much more than mere automation. It enables machines to learn from data, make decisions and optimize processes. This is reason enough for European companies to significantly increase their pace of AI innovation in order to keep up with Asian and US suppliers. According to experts, in particular small and medium-sized companies have been very cautious so far. In the future, however, there will be no way around AI. “Not using AI is not an option.” This is because AI is prone to error and therefore does not render humans redundant in manufacturing. The ability to recognize these mistakes is an urgent requirement that must be developed. In Canada, this year’s partner country for EMO, people tend to be more relaxed about the hype surrounding AI. The representative of NGen (Next Generation Manufacturing Canada), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting world-leading advanced manufacturing solutions, sums it up succinctly: “AI is not the solution, AI is part of the solution.“ Eric Schäfer editor-in-chief Made for Metalworking Welcome to the world’s leading trade fair for production technology. www.emo-hannover.com
