materials & tools New universal twist drill for small diameters The launch of the new BasicDrill Micro continues EMUGE-FRANKEN´s product range extension of solid carbide twist drills. The manufacturer of precision tools is now expanding its range of universal drills with numerous variants of small diameters between 1 and 2.95 mm. The product line now covers sizes from 1 to 24.5 mm, with drilling lengths of 3xD, 5xD, 6xD or 8xD, depending on the version. High precision and productivity EMUGE-FRANKEN developed several improvements when designing the BasicDrill Micro. Four instead of the usual two margins with a length of up to 4xD ensure very precise guidance and high drilling quality, even with demanding materials. In this way particularly soft drill walls and precise roundings are produced, which is an advantage for subsequent tapping operations. The internal cooling channels and the high-performance coating also contribute to high process reliability. The BasicDrill Micro is designed as a universal drill that can be used for a wide range of materials; this is proven by comprehensive test series with a large number of test drillings in various materials Higher cutting values and longer tool life The Franconians also set their own standards in terms of drill geometry. The result is a new cutting edge geometry with a special rounding of the edges and a point angle of 130°. The results is a longer service and tool life, while the tool also works more productively, which shortens machining times. Thanks to the improved geometry, higher cutting values and machining with feed rates that are up to 30 % higher than those of competitor products are possible. The new design also optimizes the centering behavior, which is why piloting and centering can be dispensed with. The new BasicDrill CM-C step drill is the first product group available at the launch of Quickline 12 no. 3, September 2025

materials & tools A “true” universal drill bit The twist drill is available in all three shank types for different requirements: → HA with a smooth shank → HE with an inclined clamping flat for Whistle-Notch chucks → HB with a lateral driving flat for Weldon tool holders The BasicDrill Micro as a universal drill can be used for a wide range of materials. This is proven by comprehensive test series with a large number of test drill holes in various materials. The comparisons show convincing results across numerous materials. This makes the twist drill just as suitable for simple and stainless steels and non-ferrous metals, such as copper and aluminum, as it is for hardened and difficult-to-machine materials. “We have succeeded in achieving an optimum mix of quality and performance at a very competitive price with this new product,” explains Martin Steinbach, Product Manager Drilling Tools. Target sectors include the watchmaking industry, precision engineering and medical technology, food processing and general mechanical engineering. Successful twist drill product campaign Since EMUGE-FRANKEN launched its product campaign for twist drills in 2021 with the BasicDrill, sales in the segment have increased significantly. The first 3xD and 5xD models were followed in 2024 by the 8xD drills. Previ ously the company was primarily known for its highquality threading tools. New Quickline service: More choice and speed in the procurement of twist drills EMUGE-FRANKEN is now launching a new service called Quickline: customers can design the tools they want themselves, using a range of parameters and order directly their desired product. The ordered quantities are then delivered in less than four weeks. On the one hand the service is aimed at small and mediumsized machining companies that only need a few drills. On the other hand, the service also appeals to series manufacturers who need tools for test drilling quickly. The short delivery time is made possible thanks to an automated workflow. It allows production of the tools to begin within 24 hours of receipt of the order. The new BasicDrill CM-C step drill is the first product group available at the start of Quickline. In the future the service will be extended to other tools. Configure and order online Customers can configure and order the tool types available via Quickline in the EMUGE-FRANKEN online shop. They then automatically receive a confirmation with an individual article number for their product. They can use this to reorder the same twist drill at a later date – without having to enter the required article specifications again. Configuration based on five parameters The BasicDrill CM-C, which is currently available via Quickline, can be customized using five different parameters. There is a choice of diameters between 2.8 mm and 18 mm, step angles from 30 ° to 160 °, cylindrical drilling depths from 4 mm to 54 mm. Three different shank types are also available, as well as optional corner protection for use in abrasive materials.
