editorial Is the glass half full or half empty? Eric Schäfer editor-in-chief The opinions of economic experts differ when it comes to making forecasts for the global economy. What is certain is that trade conflicts and other political and economic turbulences are weighing on the economy. But whether the current slump in growth is already the beginning of a crisis or whether it is just a dent or even a slight weakness - as others think - the coming months will show. Although investments in mechanical and plant engineering are declining worldwide, these declines are assuming a high level in many places. Even the economic experts from the IMF (International Monetary Fund) do not agree on how to proceed. EMO, the world trade fair for metalworking, could become a trend barometer. The fair, which will take place in Hanover, in September from 16 to 21, is always an important sentiment indicator. No noticeable restraint on the part of exhibitors can be observed in the run-up to the fair. And the interest of the visitors also seems to be unbroken. This is shown by this issue of “journal of hp tooling”, which is once again packed to the brim with trade fair innovations from exhibiting companies. Once again, digitisation will be a major topic at EMO. The extent to which digital transformation will change the tool industry will be explained in the excellent article by the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation. In particular, it provides small and medium-sized companies in the tool manufacturing market with a precise concept for implementing digital technologies. Further interesting technical articles can be read on “Productive PCD precision machining” and on a process that describes “Hybrid coating for the tool industry”. They show how existing processes can be further developed and perfected. In any case, the glass is half full with sustainable ideas and the right strategy.
