Processing In early 2020

Processing In early 2020 plans began in earnest for the powder production line. As the first of its kind in the country, this took a lot of consultation between all the parties involved, including equipment suppliers such as HRS Heat Exchangers. The process begins when the carrots are diced and then pureed, after which they are fed into the heat exchanger. This consists of two HRS R Series rotary scraped surface heat exchangers placed in series, which raise the temperature of the carrot puree from 10 °C to 60 °C. As well as the heat exchangers themselves, HRS supplied two feed hoppers and an HRS BP Series positive displacement pump to feed the puree into the heat exchanger. The heat for the process is supplied from a dedicated steam boiler and the line has a capacity of 500 kg of puree per hour. The warmed puree is then passed over a drying drum where it is dried to create a flaked product which is milled down into the finished powder. “Pre-heating the puree before the drier performs two main functions,” explains HRS UK Sales Manager, Andy Ensor. “Warming the puree makes it easier to move through the line as it has less resistance, but the biggest benefit is that it reduces the amount of energy needed to dry the puree making the overall process more efficient.” Production of carrot powder began in the first half of 2021 and the line now produces around 60kg of dried finished product an hour. The carrot powder is produced under Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS) accreditation and is used as an ingredient in animal feed. “With the tight margins involved in fresh produce, it is important to maximize the value of the crop which has cost you money to grow, and this line allows us to utilise the entire crop,” adds Steven Kay. “The line has been designed to be able to handle other crops, but we have initially chosen to focus on carrots and although we have had to make tweaks as you do with any new process, we are now very happy with the quality and of the product that we are producing.” fmt Huntapac washes and packs up to 400 tonnes of carrots a day, of which around 5% are used to make powder 34 food Marketing & Technology • April 2022

Processing Energy Efficiency up to IE5+ The new IE5+ motor generation from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS guarantees the highest levels of efficiency and operational reliability, thanks to IE5+ technology. It combines the advantages of the modular system with the opportunities for version reduction and makes an essential contribution to reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). The new IE5+ motor generation was designed by NORD DRIVESYSTEMS with special focus on use in the intralogistics sector as well as the food and beverage industry. The especially compact and energyefficient synchronous motors feature a high efficiency over a wide torque range and thus also possess optimum energy consumption performance in partial load and partial speed ranges. The enormous energy saving potential becomes especially apparent in direct comparison between a regular IE3 asynchronous motor (0.75 kW, 83 % motor efficiency, right-angle gear units) and a corresponding IE5+ synchronous motor (0.75 kW, 93 % motor efficiency, right-angle gear units). Considering 16 operating hours per day (4000 p.a.) there will be energy savings of app. 400 kWh per year. The corresponds to a CO 2 emission factor of 366 g/kWh, app. 0.15 t CO 2 per year, per drive. Considering, that there often are more than 2,000 drives installed in one system, this amounts to a CO 2 saving potential of app. 300 t CO 2 per year. Due to the optimized power density, space savings of up to 40 % can also be achieved with the compact IE5+ motor compared to conventional asynchronous motors. The same installation space can also accommodate a more powerful motor with higher energy efficiency Systematic version reduction The constant torque over a large speed range allows a targeted version reduction. This minimizes administrative costs, and enables streamlined production, logistics, storage, and service processes. The investment pays for itself within a short time. Utilizing the high overload capacity of the motors and the system’s wide adjustment range, the solution is individually tailored to each customer and specifically designed for the system’s individual load range. Besides version reduction and higher energy efficiency the use of IE5+ technology is also notable for the motor’s small size and their being compact, plug-in capable, and configurable via plug-and-play. Modular, scalable motor design The IE5+ synchronous motors can be combined with all gear units and drive electronics from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS in a modular system. This results in a system solution from a single source in which all components are seamlessly matched. fmt food Marketing & Technology • April 2022 35 Key No. 102618
